Thermal mass air flow meters utilize the principle of heat conduction: directly affecting the quality of the measured gas environment, without temperature or pressure compensation. They are an advanced experimental instrument for gas flow control and measurement, representing the development trend of gas flow measurement.

The sensor part of the thermal mass air flow meter maintains a constant temperature difference higher than the fluid temperature through two reference resistive temperature sensor groups. That is to say, the thermal energy carried away when gas flows through the heating element is directly proportional to the gas flow rate and gas density. In order to maintain a fixed temperature difference between the two different temperature sensors, the circuit needs to provide more power to the heating element, and the output power in the circuit is related to the mass management of the fluid, measuring data flow from the mass of the fluid.
Thermal mass air flow meters are widely used in power, oil and gas, environmental protection, metallurgy, papermaking, and other industries for measuring multi-component gas flow, including single-component gas-solid ratios.
The research and development of thermal mass air flow meters in China started relatively late, with a significant gap compared to foreign countries. Currently, most thermal gas mass flow sensors on the domestic market are expensive imported products, while the number of domestic products is small and their performance is inferior to foreign products. In recent years, due to increasingly high requirements for energy conservation and environmental protection in China's domestic process control and management industry, more and more indicators have evolved from rough estimates to quantitative research and analysis, and many raw materials and displacements require high-precision measurement. Flowmeters have become a focal point in the domestic testing and measurement field, with mass flow meters being the most prominent. Currently, due to the rapid economic development of thermal gas mass flow meters, large market demand, and high cost-effectiveness, some domestic universities and companies are also dedicated to research in this area and have achieved certain research results.
However, compared with the research on thermal mass air flow meters at home and abroad, especially in the design and integration of probe structures and flow signal processing methods, there is still a significant gap. Signal processing methods mainly include technical methods used by enterprises to process the relationship between the flow and output signals of thermal gas flow meters using various algorithms and equipment, which is a core component of flow meters. Research in these two areas is of great significance.
Thermal mass air flow meters are instruments that measure gas flow using the principle of thermal diffusion. The sensor consists of two reference-grade resistive temperature detectors (RTDs). One is the velocity sensor RH, and the other is the temperature sensor RMG, used to measure the temperature change of the gas. When the two RTDs are placed in the gas to be measured, sensor RH is heated, and the other sensor RMG is used to sense the temperature of the measured gas. As the gas flow increases in our country, the airflow not only carries away more heat, but the temperature of sensor RH also decreases.
